Moulin Rouge Takes Jayne to 92-Point Score at Killeen

KILLEEN, Texas --- It was a horse with a French name, Moulin Rouge that took Frenchman Evan Jayne to a 92-point score at the Killeen Rodeo.

Jayne, who came to the U.S. as an exchange student now makes his home in Huntsville where he went to college at Sam Houston State University. Rodeo fans at the City Center arena were excited when Zach Dishman rode Free Ride to an 86-point marking on Friday night.

On Saturday, after Jayne made his ride, they were definitely getting their money’s worth. Jayne received $1,111 for his eight-second effort while Dishman earned $864. Jayne won the Southwestern Livestock Exposition Rodeo in Fort Worth last February and is hoping for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualification next December.

Clay Cerny, from Brazoria, Texas, has been to the big show in Las Vegas before, but is not traveling as much and making his family his priority. However, the talented tie-down roper is still competing at Texas Circuit rodeos and took home the Killeen title. His total time of 18.3 seconds on two runs put him at the front of the 70-man field.

Reigning world champion all-around cowboy Trevor Brazile, from Decatur, Texas, competed in tie-down roping, steer roping and team roping. He and partner Patrick Smith, from Midland, Texas were the most successful duo in team roping with a total time of 9.4 seconds on two runs.

Australian Lance Kelly earned the saddle bronc riding title with an 84-point ride on Bad Company Rodeo’s horse American Woman. Kelly earned $1,191. J.W. Harris from May, Texas, qualified for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in 2006 and is hoping to make 2007 his second. He won the bull riding on Wild Wild West with an 89-point ride. He won $2,793.

After his success during the regular rodeo, Harris was selected to ride the bounty bull of the night, Walk This Way, Bad Company Rodeo’s bull with Baditude. The bounty bull was presented by local sponsor Toyota of Killeen. The first night, the bull Crazy Train was worth $1,000 for Bryan Edwards from Dayton, Texas. Edwards failed to make it to the whistle, so the bounty went up to $2,000 on Friday night.

As the high-marked rider of the night, Harris was the rider who had the opportunity to ride for the bounty. He rode the bull for just over seven seconds before getting bucked off. Saturday night the bounty went up to $3,000 and it was Chad Eubank from Cleburne, Texas, on Bad to the Bone that would attempt to get the money.

Bad to the Bone got the best of Eubank, so in lieu of the bounty, Toyota of Killeen is making a donation to a local animal shelter.

Other winners at the Killeen Rodeo include Savanah Koenig from Marble Falls in the women’s barrel race and J.B. Whatley, from Gardendale, Texas in steer roping. Reid Barker from Comfort, Texas won the Who’s Your Daddy Jr. Bull Riding.
